shoulder joint can move in all directions but this flexibility also makes it an easy target for injuries and dislocations as it is equally unstable and basically not a very strong joint. The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint and can result in either the humerus bone come out partially from the glenoid (socket) or totally out and dislocated from it. It can also tear ligaments and tendons in the joint thus affecting the nerves. Being dislocated in any direction i.e. backward, forward or downward, anterior dislocation is the most common among them.
being dependent on factors such as a sudden forceful blow that can rip out the bone, repeated use or injury borne during contact sports, an accident or a traumatic fall resulting in an immediate bulge on the shoulder making it appear deformed, intense pain and weakness as well as inability to move the joint. It is essential to keep the shoulder immobilized before the patient reaches an orthopedic surgeon or doctor. Evaluation and examination gives an insight as to what course of action would be taken further. Imaging tests indicate the severity of the dislocation and enables the surgeon to adhere to a treatment plan accordingly.
Though both these terms hold different significance. Dislocation is when the arm bone is partially or totally out of the socket whereas repeated dislocations due to over use or loosening of muscles result in the shoulder becoming weak causing instability. In shoulder instability the symptoms do not affect the patient much and pain is felt only on doing certain activities or moving the shoulder in a particular way or direction.

Under this technique the arm is put back in the socket by gently rotating and maneuvering it. After the arm is repositioned in the socket the shoulder is held in a sling to immobilize it and therapy exercises are prescribed to gradually bring back motion in the shoulder.
Through 3 to 4 minimal invasive incisions a fibre-optic camera and small instruments are inserted and repair is done through this so called keyhole surgery. It is an outpatient technique, almost painless with no scars on the joint.
With severe dislocation the orthopedics will have to undertake open surgery which is more lengthy and the cuts are more deeper and longer than an arthroscopic repair. It takes a while longer to heal with the patient staying back in the hospital for a night at least.
The most important tool of the surgeon are the therapy exercises which are accompanied with all surgical or closed reduction technique. Shoulder joint cannot be healed completely without these gentle exercises that help in bringing back the lost mobility. Even after treatment the patient has to continue with his exercises under an able therapist to complete the healing process.
